Set a pattern

With your group, decide which channel you use and how often you check each other in. If you have set dial-in times, you can turn off the radio when not in use to conserve battery life.

Communication off the beaten track

As WiFi coverage has expanded, cell phones have largely replaced walkie-talkies when it comes to communicating in the great outdoors. However, if you stray too far, you may not have a phone or data connection, which isn't a problem if you have a walkie-talkie handy.

Help in a difficult moment

Should you or your party find yourself or your party in danger without using your hands, walkie-talkies have voice-activated transmission that allows you to send a message without pressing a button.

A multitasking tool

Both the walkie-talkie and flashlight are essential tools for exploring, but they can weigh on your pack. Rather than sacrificing one for the other, many radios have a built-in LED flashlight to light your way if you find yourself hiking at night. Also, this extra carrying weight can be used for spare batteries to power your walkie-talkie.
